KAMPALA.

Investigations into the death of Lydia Babirye, daughter of former Buganda Katikiro Engineer John Baptist Walusimbi, have taken a shocking twist after the prime suspect, Abubakar Ntege, denied allegations that he abducted and murdered her.

Katikiro Walusimbi in unspeakable sorrow

On Wednesday, a team of Special homicide investigators  under tight security escorted Ntege to his residence in Kiteredde Village, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso District, where Babirye’s body was recovered. The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to reconstruct events leading to how Ntege forced Babirye have her signature on her death certificate and to verify statements made during the investigation.

Our very reliable Police sources disclosed to this mighty news website that upon arrival, Ntege frankly told  the investigators that he and the deceased had been involved in a secret love affair for close to five years. Because they were deeply involved with each other, Babirye often visited him at his home, where they engaged in sexual relations.

The burning desire between the two lovers had become so deep-rooted that it blinded them to the reality that they were both members of the same clan. According to Kiganda culture, which both Ntege and Babirye subscribed to, clan members are considered siblings. Therefore, for them to engage in a romantic relationship is considered highly forbidden because it is equated to incest.

The deceased Lydia

Ntege narrated to investigators that on the day Babirye died, they were having sexual intercourse when she suddenly developed an unusual condition and asked for water to drink. After drinking the water, her condition worsened, and she later died.

These happenings remind us of Zimbabwe’s seasoned and sagacious former President, Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s remark that when you are beautiful without brains, your private parts suffer the most.

However, based on the way things are unfolding, this ironic saying might end up being changed to: when you’re beautiful without brains, your private parts don’t only suffer the most but can also cost you your life.

Investigators reportedly did not find Ntege’s explanation satisfactory and pressed him further with additional questions, but he maintained his account.

HOW NTEGE ADOPTED THE KIDNAP STORY

At this point, investigators questioned Ntege about why he had created a story suggesting that he had  kidnapped Babirye and even went further to demand a ransom of UGX 19 million from her family to set her free if she had died after becoming unwell during sex.

Ntege reportedly responded that, in a state of hysteria, he first dressed Babirye’s body with the intention of taking her to hospital. However, when he remembered that she came from a wealthy and influential family, he feared they would not believe the bitter truth that their daughter had died during a sexual encounter and would instead blame him and have him imprisoned.

It was then, according to his account, that he came up with a plan to make it appear that he had kidnapped Babirye. To make the plot seem genuine, he sent a direct message to Babirye’s daughter claiming that he had kidnapped her mother and was demanding UGX 19 million as ransom.

When investigators asked Ntege what he intended to do with the ransom money, he reportedly said that rather than rot in prison, he planned to flee the country and use the money to start a new life elsewhere.

QUESTIONS ON A FRESHLY DUG HOLE

When investigators asked him to explain the purpose of a freshly dug hole behind his house, roughly the size of a grave, Ntege  admitted that he had dug it intending to bury Babirye there because her body had started to decompose and emit a foul smell.

He also reportedly admitted that, by the time he was arrested, he had already carried out traditional cleansing rituals to rid himself of Babirye’s ghost, which he claimed was haunting him.

Our police sources further stated that investigators found no immediate evidence of a physical struggle or visible injuries on Babirye’s corpse.Because they could not rely solely on Ntege’s statements, forensic specialists were assigned to examine the deceased’s remains and determine the actual cause of death.
