Wagagai Mining (U) Limited emerged as the biggest award winner at Uganda’s 15th Annual Mineral Wealth Conference held at Speke Resort Munyonyo, taking the Mining Company of the Year Award and finishing runner-up in both the Workplace Health and Safety and Responsible Mining and Environmental Stewardship categories.
The two-day conference, held under the theme “Beneath the Surface: Unlocking Africa’s Next Mining Powerhouse,” brought together key players in Uganda’s mining sector and was graced by State Minister for Mineral Development Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, who called for action on commitments made during the conference.

The recognition places the Busia-based gold producer at the centre of Uganda’s rapidly expanding mining industry, as the country pushes for more investment, local processing and value addition.
A MAJOR INVESTMENT IN BUSIA
Wagagai Mining was established in 2019 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of China’s Liaoning Hongda Enterprise Group.

Its gold project is located in Alupe Village, Buteba Sub-county, Busia District, covering about 9.24 square kilometres.
The company has invested more than US$200 million, equivalent to about Shs795 billion, in the project so far, according to figures provided for the company.
It also plans to inject a further US$50 million, worth about Shs199 billion, as it expands its operations.
The wider project has previously been reported as a US$250 million investment involving mining and mineral processing facilities.
MORE THAN A GOLD MINE
Wagagai’s operation goes beyond extracting ore.
The project incorporates processing and refining facilities designed to produce high-purity gold within Uganda, supporting the government’s push to reduce the export of unprocessed minerals.
The facility has been designed to process thousands of tonnes of ore daily and produce between 1.2 and 1.5 tonnes of refined gold annually, depending on production conditions.
The project is expected to sustain operations for more than two decades, with further investment planned as the company develops additional phases of the mine.
JOBS AND LOCAL PARTICIPATION
The investment has also created employment opportunities in Busia.
Uganda Investment Authority has previously reported that the project has generated more than 2,000 jobs for Ugandans, alongside training for hundreds of local technical workers.
For a district where artisanal gold mining has historically been an important source of livelihood, the arrival of large-scale commercial mining has brought a new model based on industrial extraction, processing and refining.
The company has also been involved in engagements with communities around the mining area as it expands its operations.
WHY WAGAGAI MATTERS TO UGANDA’S MINING SECTOR
The project comes at a time when government is seeking to turn Uganda’s mineral wealth into a larger contributor to industrialisation and economic growth.

Rather than exporting minerals in raw form, authorities are encouraging investors to establish processing and refining facilities locally.
That policy is particularly significant for gold, given its high value and the potential for the sector to generate foreign exchange, employment and industrial activity.
Wagagai’s investment therefore gives Uganda a large-scale example of the value-addition model it is seeking to promote.
